Jay York Titles and Artist Statement

Zakarian Van, 61 Center Street, 1978
Popkins Zakarian as a Portland City Councilor in 1967 was an outspoken critic of the proposed Model Cities Program. That program was responsible for the "urban renewal" that demolished large swaths of residential neighborhoods in Portland. This lot currently is used for parking and is to the west side of Brian Boru.

Laundry Lines, 37 Pleasant Street, 1978
I passed by this scene almost every day on my way to and from the Portland School of Art. The building these lines were attached to was a brick rooming house built in 1900 that had been converted to apartments. The building and the people who lived there always reminded me of the photographs of the "big city" tenement houses. It was converted to six condominiums in 2008.
